Being a student is tough. We juggle part-time work, with full-time study; we relocate hours from our families; travel kilometres each day to get to class; spend more time on the phone to centrelink, than to our friends. We’re studying till midnight, attending club and society events and still trying to manage some inkling of a social life.

We’re Sophie and Nathan; this year’s President and General Secretary of the National Union of Students (NUS). We know first-hand exactly how hard being a student can be. We both came from low-socioeconomic public schools and relied heavily on Centrelink to enable us to get to uni at all. Which is why we got involved with NUS.

NUS is the peak representative and advocacy body for students in Australia. We fight for a fairer and more accessible education system with the belief that education is the key to a more prosperous and just society. We seek to protect and advance the rights and interests of undergraduate students by working with campus-based student organisations. The National Union of Students is the body for students in Australia. Whether it’s hosting educational conferences, leading national campaigns against funding cuts; bringing a powerful voice to marginalised or disadvantaged students; fighting for social justice; or lobbying government officials in the interests of students. You can find your voice with NUS.

This year, we want to engage with more students than NUS ever has before and we want to be truly representative of all students right across Australia. We’ll be visiting your campus to speak with students about campaigns we are running and about issues relevant to them. We publish research on higher education and run events through our various departments. We’ll be running conferences on higher education, women’s rights, ethno-cultural, and students with disabilities rights.

University is the place where we discover ourselves; it is where we become world changing thinkers, thought leaders and develop into the kind of people we are proud to be. You have the power to shape higher education in this country.

Get involved!
