From Music, to Gardening, to Politics: A who’s who of student clubs in 2022

Clubs and societies have always been an integral part of not just La Trobe’s student life but university life across the country. For many students, being at university is more than just receiving a credential, but a life changing experience with an opportunity to connect with others and make not only long-lasting friendships but people who you will continue to work with in the years going forward. The last couple of years have taken a massive toll on clubs’ abilities to host events and gain engagement, but this year an abundance of new and old clubs at La Trobe are planning social events and activities for students.

Rabelais has reached out to a number of active clubs at La Trobe University, many of these clubs are currently not officially affiliated with the university due to the sudden change this year in how clubs become affiliated, and so cannot be found on the La Trobe website. A broad list of affiliated clubs can be found here. A range of clubs reached out to provided Rabelais with statements explaining the purpose of their club and what they will be doing in 2022.

La Trobe University Society of Music

LUSoM (La Trobe University Society of Music) is a club for those who love to play music or sing! We meet Tuesdays and Thursdays on campus from 5pm to 8pm (room TBC) and basically jam and practice our skills. We accept any instrument and ability level, all you gotta do is bring yourself and your instrument along. We’re a laid back, social club, and it's totally ok if you can’t make every meeting! There is also no membership fee! Feel free to check us out and come whenever you can. For those interested in performing, there are opportunities for LUSoM members to perform on campus (check out our YouTube channel!). Feel free to check us out on Facebook or email us at latrobeunisocietyofmusic@gmail.com

The Patch

The Patch Bundoora is a student-run community gardening space located behind the library. No previous knowledge or experience in gardening is necessary to join The Patch as all are welcome. The garden is a mix of edible food crops, aesthetic flowering plants, and indigenous natives, so there should be something for everyone! Get in touch by liking or messaging us via Facebook or Instagram.

La Trobe University History, Anthropology & Sociology Society

We plan to create a place for conversation, events and discussions about history, anthropology, and sociology. All students studying or interested in the humanities are welcome. Join us in reviving the social sciences and humanities at La Trobe! Our IGM will be held over zoom, the link can be found in our Facebook group and you can sign up through our registry here.

La Trobe University International Relations Association

LIRA is a club for students studying or interested in international relations, politics, or anything related to these fields. In the past we have hosted drinks nights (Peace and Pints), lecture series with guest speakers, weekly news and more. This year we plan to finalize and host the larger events that were hindered by COVID last year, such as the humanities ball and a Model United Nations. For more information or if you have any queries or concerns feel free to contact us on Facebook.

La Trobe Labor Club

La Trobe Labor Club is a social group for like minded students interested in discussion and debate. Sign up to the La Trobe Labor Club and become part of one of the most active and engaged clubs on campus. We do everything from drinks in the pub with MPs, to amazing interstate conferences, to running student political campaigns, and a whole lot in between!

It is a great opportunity to meet some new friends, build your skills, and make a real difference.

Socialist Alternative

Who are Socialist Alternative La Trobe?

We’re the revolutionary Marxists on campus!

Capitalism is a system run for the rich and powerful, not the needs of the majority. Letting the coronavirus rip; catastrophic climate change; the torture of refugees and the oppression of Aboriginal people – these are just some of the horrors people are subjected to by capitalist society.

Socialist Alternative wants to build a movement that can one day overthrow capitalism completely, while organizing campaigns to fight back in the here-and-now. We have branches in most major cities and student clubs at universities around the country.

We’ve been centrally involved in campaigns like the successful fight for marriage equality and organizing tens of thousands to march for climate justice in the wake of the 2020 bushfires.

Get involved with us today to learn about anti-capitalist politics and start fighting this rotten system!

La Trobe University Islamic Society

The LaTrobe Islamic Society Club is set up, and run so as to support the Muslim students on campus, and all those interested about Islam. We aim at creating university a second home for them, with educational classes about Islam, and fun social activities. In short, a club for Muslims by Muslims. Check out our Facebook page.

If you are interested in expanding student social life at La Trobe and forming a club, the affiliation form can be found here.
